India's top sexologist recently told a hearing in the US about a new drug for treating obesity, Orlistat, which is the mainstay in the world's health-care system.
The FDA, in its latest decision, decided that Orlistat is the first drug in its class to be approved for treatment of obesity, and the most commonly prescribed medication.
But the agency, which has been pushing the drug for nearly three decades, and has been working with pharmaceutical companies to develop and market the drug, is now facing several challenges over its potential to cause serious health problems.
The problem is that Orlistat, which is sold as Xenical, is sold as Xenical, and not the drug's generic version. It is being prescribed to patients in India in the hope that it will become the first drug approved for weight loss in the country.
